Traverse Cabinet
The doors of this simple black wardrobe cabinet feature a photographic mosaic on translucent panels. Interior LED illumination allows the doors to glow softly.
The concept for this piece developed while I was on a cycling trip. When I’m riding, my focus is constantly moving from far to near, from distant sky and scenery to the smallest details passing close by: the pattern of a leaf, the texture on a rock.
I wanted to capture that sense of moving through the landscape in a mosaic of image fragments sourced from all over the country, with the result being a kind of pan-Canadian composite landscape. Each fragment is intentionally anonymous, even non-descript, and in most cases it is not obvious where a given piece came from.
The assembled images were digitally printed on transparency film which was then sandwiched between acrylic panels in the cabinet doors.
40” wide, 80” high, 26” deep.
